How American Consumers Can Enroll in Health Coverage Year-Round
What is a Special Enrollment Period (SEP)?
In the United States, the annual Open Enrollment Period for ACA coverage runs from November 1 through January 15 in most states. Outside this window, you can only enroll in or change health plans if you experience a certified Qualifying Life Event (QLE). A QLE grants you a strict 60-day window to select coverage.
The Four Main Categories of US Qualifying Life Events
- Loss of Minimum Essential Coverage: Losing job-based health insurance, aging off a parent’s plan at age 26, losing Medicaid or CHIP eligibility during annual state renewals, or COBRA expiration.
- Changes in Household Size: Getting married, having a baby, adopting a foster child, or legal separation/divorce resulting in loss of dependent health coverage.
- Relocation: Moving to a new US zip code or county that offers different Marketplace health insurance plans, or moving to the USA from abroad.
- Changes in Income or Immigration Status: Gaining US citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or experiencing income shifts that alter subsidy eligibility.
Documenting Your SEP with the Marketplace
Federal regulations require proof of the event (e.g., termination of coverage letter, marriage certificate, or birth record) within 30 days of plan selection. Our bilingual US enrollment team assists you in submitting acceptable documentation directly to HealthCare.gov to ensure immediate plan activation.
